Lawrence Mack Russell

Lawrence Mack Russell, a native of Athens, age 72 years, 8 months, departed this life with his wife, Sandi, “the love of his life” by his side, to spend eternity in Heaven, on Thursday, August 21, 2014.   He courageously battled Myelodysplastic Syndrome for the past three and one-half years.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John Beavers Russell and Lucille Frye Russell and his maternal grandparents, Isaac Leo and Fannie McNutt Cranfield, his parents Robert L. and Rachel Cranfield Russell, his brother, Larry D. Russell.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra Russell; daughter Kristin (Tom) Williams; granddaughter Ellie Rose Williams; three stepsons; aunt, Della Cranfield Brewer, and members of the “Cranfield Cousins Club”, sister-in-law, Irene Russell; nieces and nephew, childhood friend, Bobby Johnson along with many other friends.

His early education was at North Liberty School, a one-room school house in McMinn County. He was a 1959 honors graduate at McMinn County High School. Mack received a Congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. At the academy he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Upon graduation in 1964, he was commissioned as an Ensign. He later became a Naval Aviator in 1966. In 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He had various assignments that included the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. Other Mediterranean assignments included aircraft patrol squadrons, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW). On return to the United States, his assignments included patrol and training naval aviators for landing on aircraft carriers.

In 1973 he ended his naval career as a Lieutenant. He then attended the University of Maine receiving a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hartford. Mack was employed by Pratt & Whitney (Aircraft Engine Division), as a Senior Project Engineer and later was associated with Combustion Engineering (Nuclear Reactor Division), as a Senior Development Engineer.

In 1974 he was Airline Captain, Charter Pilot for Down East Airlines in Rockland, ME

Mack returned to Athens in 2001 where he met his childhood friend, Sandra Goforth Ross, and they were married on February 8, 2007.

He, along with his wife were Sky Watchers for Chief Meteorologist, Paul Byras at WRCB TV-3 since 2007.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Ziegler Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Ingram officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens with military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Royce Cranfield, Carl Brewer, Joe Cranfield, Bill Cranfield, Jim D. Lovingood, Ted Monroe, Lance Farrell, and Mark Roberts. Honorary pallbearer will be Bobby Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 p.m. Saturday at Ziegler Funeral Home.
