Martha Agnes Penney

July 26, 1924 – Feb 18, 2016

Martha was born in New York, NY to Mr. and Mrs. Robert James McMullan. The youngest of three girls, her sisters Jane and Anne preceded her in death. After graduating from High School she was working at Drydock Savings Bank and attending Marble Collegiate Church in New York City, where she met her sweetheart John Penney, who was then serving in the U.S. Maritime Service, in 1945. The couple was married on December 16, 1945 at Marble Collegiate by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and eventually moved to Long Island to Center Moriches, NY where they raised their four children, John, Robert, James and Sara, with James and Sara being a surprise set of twins.

Possessing a true servant’s heart, Martha was a wonderful homemaker, faithfully caring for both family and friends and serving in her local church and as a Girl Scout leader in her community. Martha was an avid quilter and enjoyed sewing and smocking dresses for her granddaughters. She also worked for a time as a photographer for the local newspaper. After retirement in 1981, John and Martha moved to Athens, TN where they were again active in church and community life, delivering “Meals on Wheels” to local shut-ins until 2012, into their late 80’s.

Martha was a strong Christian, trusting alone in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ and his life of perfect righteousness for her own salvation and righteous standing before God. Martha was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Martha McMullan, her sisters Jane Newbury and Anne McCord and her great-grandson Luke Shumate. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, John A. Penney Sr., their sons John A. Penney Jr. and his wife Rebecca (“Becky”), Robert M. Penney and his wife Wilma (“Winkie”), James F. Penney and his wife Dorothy (“Dottie”) and their daughter Sara (“Sally”) Kessler and her husband Paul M. Kessler. Martha is also survived by two nieces, Martha Anne Stavre (nee McCord) and her husband John and Harriet Estelle (nee Newbury) and her husband Harry as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and other support from so many people and especially those at Life Care Center in Athens, TN and the prayers and visits from family and friends, during her final days. A memorial service will be held at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, 800 Decatur Pike, Athens, TN 37303 on Saturday, February 27, 2016. Receiving of friends and family begins at 9:30 am with the service starting at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Allen Memorial UMC.

If you are unable to attend the visitation or service, sign the guest registry at www.zieglerfuneralhome.com
