Albert Alvin Coleman

Albert Alvin Coleman, age 94, of Athens, died Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at his home.

He went to join his loving wife of 79 years, Cora “Tokie” Yarberry Coleman, whom preceded him in death on November 20, 2016.  Albert was a native of Madisonville and a longtime resident of Athens and was a son of the late W.M. and Nancy Belle Benfield Coleman. He was preceded in death by his son, Alvin albert Coleman, four sisters, Martha Hamilton, Mary Coleman, Lou Garrison and Grace Llewellyn, including four brothers, Jim Coleman, Homer Coleman, Fred Coleman and Johnny Coleman.

Albert was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany during WWII, owned and operated Coleman’s Paint and Body Shop for many years and was a faithful member of Woodward Avenue Church of God.

Albert is survived by seven daughters and four sons-in-law:

Jewell Ann Adams of Athens

Nancy and Bobby “Sherlock” Holmes of Athens

June and Ben Ammons of Athens

Pat and Pete Peterson of Knoxville

Mary White of Niota

Dale Lyles of Athens

Clara and Rod Starnes of Athens

12 Grandchildren

11 Great-grandchildren and 3 Great-great grandchildren

One brother, Cecil M. Coleman of Athens

Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday at Woodward Avenue Church of God with Pastor Clifford Waters    and Pastor Wayne Fritts officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be with Craig Holmes, Chris Holmes, Randy Peterson, Kody Peterson, Alvin Starnes and Jody Starnes.

The family will receive friends Friday 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church prior to the service.                     .

Judith “Judy” Raper Langston

Judith “Judy” Raper Langston, age 72, of Athens, died Monday, December 26, 2016 at Athens Place (formerly Brookdale of Athens).

A native and lifelong resident of Athens, she was the daughter of the late W.A. and Bonnie Croft Raper and was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Danny Langston on June 23, 2013.

Judy received her Master’s Degree in Education from Tusculum College. She served as an educator in McMinn County and was associated with the McMinn County Board of Education, serving as Technology Coordinator in the Central office until her retirement.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law:

Rob and Emily Langston of Athens

Bill and Pamela Langston of Cookeville

Her grandson, Harrison Langston of Cookeville

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Athens Place for the care and compassion shown to Judy.

At Judy’s request, there will be no formal visitation or funeral service.

John Franklin Brown

John Franklin Brown

Age 81

Of Athens

Passed away Thursday evening, December 22, 2016

At his home.

 

A native of Danville, Il., he was the son of the late Harold and Isabelle Sterling Brown and was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Helen Robertson Brown; one son, Howie Brown.  He owned and operated Earl’s Super Value in Athens, Sweetwater, and Charleston before moving to Athens, AL. John moved to Athens in 1989 before moving back to Athens, AL. and most recently moved back to Athens. He attended college at the University of Illinois where he played football and was known as “Jarring John Brown”. He was a member of the Chattanooga Scottish Rite Consistory and the Alhambra Shrine Temple, the Athens Rotary Club and was a Mason. John also was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

 

Survivors include his daughter,

Lisa Ward of Athens

Three sons and two daughters-in-law,

Scott and Teresa Brown of Wellington, FL.

Robb and Laura Brown of Yahala, FL.

Steve Davis of Athens

Nine grandchildren: Tiffiny Ward Henderson, Trent Ward and Ashley Andrews, Curtis Brown and wife, Ashley, Austin Brown, Wes Brown, Jeff  Davis, Emily Poteet and husband, Zack, Grant Davis, and Caleb Davis

Seven great grandchildren: Kanen Miller, Leah Ward, Korbin Henderson, Colt Henderson, Colby Brown, Kynnadee Poteet, and Reagan Poteet

Special granddaughter, Liz Ann Pulte and special daughter-in-law Joy Davis

Two sisters and one brother-in-law,
