Robert Ray Long Jr.

Age 74

Of Athens

Passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017

At his residence.


A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late Robert Ray Long Sr. and June Harrison Long. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Midland- Ross after 40 years of service. He was of the Sabbatarian faith.


Survivors include his wife of 49 years,

Judy Hutsell Long of Athens

One daughter and son-in-law,

Julie Ann and Roger Pierce of Englewood

Three sons and one daughter-in-law,

Terry Allen and Olga Long of Kingston

William Lee Long and fiancé, Wilma Magpili of Athens

Benjamin Jay Long of Athens

Five grandchildren: Terrence, Olliana, Cody, Jeremiah and Annabelle.

One sister and brother-in-law,

Meredith and Dewitt Altman of Etowah

Three sisters-in-law,

Mary Rue of Athens

Ida Smith of Athens

Linda Leroy and her husband, Louie of Athens


Funeral services will be 2 pm Friday in the chapel of Ziegler Funeral Home with the Chaplain Nathan Prince officiating. Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens.


Pallbearers will be Terry Allen Long, William Lee Long, Benjamin Jay Long, Charles Witt, Cody Long, and Roger Pierce.


The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

  7. Judy and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Going it alone is a major challenge. Ive been alone, now, for almost 2 years. One comforting thing,though, are the happy memories I’ve been able to recall and re-enjoy. It helps. Also, knowing that Jesus has made some promises that will impact our families in the near future, as well as Robert himself. Two such places are John 5:28,29; and Revelation 21:1-4. I hope these help to bring you and your family comfort. Steve
