James Edward “Eddy” Wampler, age 72, of Athens, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the home of his stepdaughter in Decatur.
A native of Dayton and a resident of Athens for over 30 years, he was a son of the late Hobert and Pauline White Wampler. He was preceded in death by his wife of 23 years, Carolyn Watson Wampler, a son, James David Wampler, a sister, Pat Wampler and two brothers, Bobby Wampler and Jerry Wampler.
Eddy proudly served in the US Army as a sharpshooter during the Vietnam War. He worked as a steelworker and was a faithful servant and member of Mt. Verd Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Jeff Wampler and Karen of Dayton, stepdaughter, Nancy Howard Ward of Decatur, a sister, Brenda Curtin, of Pikeville, daughter-in-law, Tracy Wampler of Dayton, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 7:00 pm Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Mt.Verd Baptist Church, located at 252 County Road 249 in Athens. Burial with military honors will be 11:00 am Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be, Jamie Wampler, Cody Fair, Timmy Loden, Randal Wampler, Jon Gibson and Chuck Day. Wayne Martin will be serving as honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Tuesday prior to the funeral service at Mt.Verd Baptist Church.
