Douglass Scott Riedel I, age 75, native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026. He was employed with The City of Athens in the Public Works Department for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Charles “Chuck” and Dorothy ‘Dot’ Hicks Riedel, his wife: Carol Dotson Riedel, and a brother: Nicholas Riedel.
Douglass is survived by his daughters: Dorothy Marie Riedel, Krystal Riedel, Michelle Riedel, and Zenovia Riedel, son: Douglas Scott Riedel II, his grandchildren: Lisa Wilcox, Douglas Scott Riedel III, Colton Riedel, Alisha Riedel, Devan Groce, Emily Dennis, Cheyenne Riedel, Barbara McGowan, Madison Dennis, several great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law: Cheryl Riedel, an aunt: Jane Johnson (Bill), and an uncle: Bill Hicks (Betty).
The family would like to offer special thanks to Douglass’ caretaker: Leslie Walden.
Visitation will be held at Ziegler Funeral Home from 12:00-2:00 PM on Thursday, April 23, 2026, with a funeral service held at 2:00 PM with Reverend Jimmy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Sullins Cemetery.
Douglass Scott Riedel III, D.J. Arp, Ezekiel Jones, Kyler Jones, Matthew McGowan, Rockie McGowan, Douglas Riedel II, and Steven Groce will serve as pallbearers.
