Mable “Estelle” Prince Powell, age 82, of the Short Creek community near Riceville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her husband, family, and friends, on Sunday, June 7, 2026. She was born and raised in Bradley County Tennessee (Charleston community).
Estelle attended Charleston School, raised her two sons, and helped her husband operate their logging business. She was a longtime member of Short Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and participated in many church activities. She was known for her strong faith, kind heart, hospitality, and for being Mamaw to many. No one made a better biscuit or sandwich.
Mamaw was one of the most remarkable women I have ever known. She loved the Lord with all her heart, and she lived out her faith every single day through the way she loved and cared for others. She devoted her life to her family, faithfully supported our family business, and was always willing to help her church and community in any way she could.
To know Mamaw was to know unconditional love. Her door was always open, and there was always room at her table. No one ever came to her house and left hungry. She could make the very best biscuits and sandwiches, but somehow the love she put into them made them taste even better.
She was Mamaw not only to her grandchildren, but to so many people who were blessed enough to know her. She had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged. She never said a bad word about anyone. She chose kindness over criticism, grace over judgement, and love above all else.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Henry and Sadie Swinford Prince, her brothers: Donald Prince, Calvin Prince, and Terry Prince, and a grandson: Josh Powell.
Estelle is survived by her loving husband of 66 years: Ray Powell, her children: Mike Powell and Curtis Powell (Christy Bailey), grandchildren: Jessica Barton (Marc), Jennifer Powell (Steven), Jacqueline Patterson, Mary Powell, Carrie Powell, Beth Powell, great-grandchildren: Dustin Mullinax (Lydia), Skyler Powell, Arlie Barton, Kash Barton, Serenity Oman, Briar Patterson, her great-great- grandchildren: Atlas Patterson, Anthem Mullinax, Holton Mullinax, Isla Mullinax, and Magnolia Mullinax, and a sister: Mary Womac.
Visitation will be held at Short Creek Baptist Church on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 9:00-11:00 AM. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM with Reverend Jimmy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow funeral services at Short Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Marc Barton, Dakota Mullinax, Nick Mashburn, Chris Williams, Payton Green, and Skyler Powell will serve as pallbearers.
