James “Jim” Garnett Benton, age 78, longtime resident of McMinn County, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. He retired from the City of Athens Fire Department after 40 years of service. Jim also served in the United States Navy and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Riceville.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Dorothy Rowe Benton, a brother: Donald Everette Benton, and a sister-in-law: Barbara Benton.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years: Sharon Jackson Benton, daughters: Dorothy Mae “Dee” Benton (Jeff) and Nichoel Dawson (Scott), a son: James “Jim Bob” Pressley Benton (Brittany), brothers: William “Bill” Benjamin Benton (Libby), Robert “Rob” Rowe Benton (Mary), grandchildren: Gregg Johnson (Tahnie), Katie Ann Andelman( Avi), Lauren Powers (Josh), Megan Dawson, Blake White (Caity), and Owen Walters, great-grandchildren: Margo, Layla, and Ruby Johnson, along with several special nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Ziegler Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM in the funeral home with Brother Jerry Stephens officiating. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
