Larry William Bettenhausen, age 92, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 6, 2025. He was a native of Wishek, North Dakota, and spent many years in Midlothian, Illinois where he retired from Navistar Corporation as an engineer. Larry moved to Athens in 1999, where he was a faithful servant at Fairview Baptist Church. He served in the United States Army Airborne during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Oliver Sr. and Emma Kramer Bettenhausen, wife of 43 years: Evelyn “Evie” Johnson Bettenhausen, sons: Phillip Bettenhausen and Larry Bettenhausen, Jr., sisters: Pearl Wahl, Lavera Ottamar, Blanche Wetzel, Coreen Bettenhausen, Mabel Larson, Muriel Schilling, Shirley Kaseman, and Ella Burr, and his brothers: Howard Bettenhausen, Charles Bettenhausen, Warren Bettenhausen, Edgar Bettenhausen, and Oliver Bettenhausen, Jr.
Larry is survived by his granddaughters: Amanda Simons (Fred) of Stevens Point, WI, and Ragna Russo (Rob) of Hammond, IN, brothers: Neil Bettenhausen (Nancy) of San Diego, CA, Richard Bettenhausen (Maxine) of Mesa, AZ, and a sister: Gladys Zimmerman (Leon) of Napoleon, ND.
Visitation will be held from 12:00-1:00 PM on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at Fairview Baptist Church in Athens. Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM with Pastor Matt Herrell and Pastor Jack Scallions officiating. Entombment will follow at McMinn Memory Gardens with full military honors.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
