Mary Matthews Obituary

Mary Ruth Varnell Matthews, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on February 18, 1930, in Calhoun, Tennessee, Mary lived a life filled with love and family. There was always room for anyone at her dinner table, and each one that had the privilege left satisfied and blessed.

Mary was a proud graduate of Calhoun High School, where she made memories playing on the basketball team. Her love for sports was a testament to her spirited personality.

She was a devoted and loving mother to her two children, Susan Mattews Buttram and Bill Matthews, and grandsons, Matthew and Nicholas Buttram, who were the center of her world. Mary found joy in spending time with her family, often taking leisurely rides on the farm where she and her husband shared 60 beautiful years together. The farm was not just a home, but a haven where countless family memories were made.

Mary’s professional life was spent at The Cleveland Daily Banner, where she worked until 2017. Her role, often centered around local obituaries, was performed with care and compassion, reflecting her deep connection to the community.

A faithful (and oldest) member of the Spring Creek Church of Christ, Mary’s life was rooted in her strong spiritual beliefs and her dedication to family.

Mary had a passion for shopping and was known for her exceptional bargain-hunting skills. She found joy in discovering great deals and adding new pieces to her wardrobe. In her leisure time, she enjoyed canning and baking, hobbies that showcased her creativity and love for home-cooked goodness. Mary was also an avid fan of Hallmark movies, often spending cozy times indulging in heartwarming stories.

Mary Ruth Matthews’ legacy is one of love, and family. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to the values of dedication, compassion, and the joy found in simple pleasures.

She is preceded in death by her parents: George L. and Nell Swafford Varnell, her husband of 60 years: Paul Thomas Matthews, grandson: Will Matthews, granddaughter: Brook Matthews, brothers: James Varnell and George Varnell, and sisters: Emily Varnell and Edna Pickens.

Mary is survived by her children, Susan Matthews Buttram and Bill Matthews, along with her grandsons, Matthew and Nicholas Buttram and many other family members and friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Upper Spring Creek Cemetery,

Eddie Burke, Rocky Kennedy, Larry Lane, Chuck Pickens, George Lasher, Matthew Buttram, and Nicholas Buttram will serve as pallbearers. Larry Arnett, Randy Shelton, and Buster Pinner will serve as honorary pallbearers.
