Richard Boren, 73, of Athens, TN passed away on July 30 after a short illness. He was born and raised in Pontotoc, MS, the son of Herman Wakley Boren and Ruby Nell (Gregory) Boren. He was a graduate of Pontotoc High School and earned degrees from both Freed-Hardeman and the University of Mississippi. His life's work revolved around public safety first as a police officer and later as a fire-fighter and then as a specialist in nuclear security with a long career with the Tennessee Valley Authority at multiple locations. In retirement, he enjoyed restoring classic cars and going to car shows. In later life he was the recipient of a kidney transplant.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy Carol (Cunningham) Boren, and sons Brett (and Rebecca), of Harvest AL; and Dr. Kyle Boren (and Courtney), of Greeneville, TN; grandchildren Barrett, Philippa Ann (Pippa), Wakely, and Whitaker. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Thomas Wakley Boren.
His final resting place will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro, AL, where his graveside service will be held at 1pm (Central) on Saturday, August 2, 2025. All are welcome to join us in our final farewell.
