Shirley Jeanette (Palmer) VanDell

Shirley Jeanette Palmer VanDell, 79, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at NHC Healthcare of Athens. She was a native of Deerfield, Michigan, former resident of Florida, and resident of McMinn County since 1984,

Shirley is preceded in death by her father and mother, Albert and Hazel (Cagle) Palmer, first husband, Frank Charles McRae, and husband of 46 years, Richard VanDell, brothers Clyde Palmer, Larry Palmer, and Jackie Palmer, and a son, Jason Hayes. She is survived by daughters, Regina White of Decatur, Rosi Farris of Athens, Rita McRae (Ben) of Cleveland, and Wynell Miller (Charles) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and a son, Rocky McRae (Sharon) of Etowah. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She is additionally survived by several nieces and nephews, along with her West End Baptist Church family.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 11:00-1:00 pm at West End Baptist Church in Athens and a funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the church. Interment will follow directly after the service at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, Tennessee.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
