Edward Gene Bates, age 80 of Athens passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at his residence.
A native of Pittsburgh PA and formerly of Manassas Park VA., he was a resident of Athens for 20 years. He was the son of the late Edward Francis and Clara Hergenroeder Bates and was preceded in death by his brother Robert Bates.
He was retired from the Department of the Interior – U.S. Geological Survey after 28 years and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years Carole Frances Wunderlin Bates,
three daughters, Dr. Teresa and John Frank of Carlisle, PA, Rebecca Bratcher of Bealeton, VA, and Deborah and Keith King of Tacoma, WA,
two sons, Brian Bates of Athens and Christopher and Amanda Bates of Gainesville, VA,
ten grandchildren, Suzanne and Jonathon Jeffries, Ashleigh Bates, Matthew Frank, Alexander King, Constance Bratcher, Katherine King, Michael Bates, Jessica Bratcher, Francesca Bates and Gwen Frank,
two sisters, Claire Anne and Tom Kelly of San Jose, CA, and Suzy Miller,
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at St. Mary Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19 with Father John Arthur Orr officiating.
